Law Week and Courts Open Day 2017

May 29, 2017

On 20 May the County Court participated in the annual Courts Open Day as part of Law Week, a festival of events held by the Victoria Law Foundation that makes learning about the law easy.

Record numbers came through the Court with 943 people attending, an 11% increase on last year, to join the ever-popular custody cells tours, watch a mock plea hearing, participate in a jury empanelment or experience a mock County Koori Court plea hearing.

The gowns and wigs exhibition made a return to Courts Open Day, showcasing judicial wear from both the County and Supreme Courts.

This year the public could experience a "behind-the-scenes" guided tour with an associate to answer any questions or take the inaugural self-guided tour with a map covering five floors of the court.

Other new additions included court sketch artist Fay Plamka, who chatted with the crowds about some of the notorious criminals she has sketched, the Victorian Government Recording Service who demonstrated how stenography works and the Victorian Bar Association, who informed the public about what it's really like to be a barrister and life at the Bar.

The County Koori courtroom was open to the public most of the day, outside the mock plea hearing session, and the common law division showcased the medical models display, explaining the past and future of how medical injuries are explained to juries in court.

Victoria Law Foundation, the Law Library, the Children's Court and Court Network shared the forecourt with the judges serving at the ever-popular Courts Charity BBQ, raising just over $700 for Berry Street, Victoria’s largest independent child and family services organisation.

Chief Judge Peter Kidd, Judge Quin, Judge Hannan, Judge Wilmoth, Judge Chambers and the Chief Magistrate Peter Lauriston were on hand to serve up sausages for a gold coin donation for this worthy cause.
Law Week was officially launched by Chief Judge Peter Kidd in the Courts' Waldron Hall on Wednesday 10 May.
