DPP v Hordern [2017] VCC CBC

Offences: various firearm-related matters.

Victoria Police executed a search warrant at Mr Hordern’s house and found a large number of firearms, silencers and ammunition.

Mr Hordern, a collector of firearms, pleaded guilty to several indictable offences under the Firearms Act 1996 (Vic) and two related summary offences under the same Act.

Mr Hordern also pleaded guilty to one charge of negligently dealing with the proceeds of crime under section 195(4) of the Crimes Act 1958 (Vic).

In sentencing Mr Hordern, Her Honour Judge Quin took into account, among other factors, the sentencing purposes of rehabilitation, deterrence and community protection.

Mr Hordern was ordered to serve a Community Corrections Order for 24 months and to perform 100 hours of unpaid community work in respect of the indictable offences.

In relation to the summary offences, he was convicted and ordered to pay a $500 fine.

Specifically the offence relating to this matter are:

  • Non prohibited person possesses unregistered category C longarm
  • Possesses general category unregistered handguns
  • Negligently dealing with proceeds of crime, possesses category D firearms that were not registered
  • Non-prohibited person possesses unregistered category A longarm
  • Non-prohibited person possesses unregistered category B longarm.
