Ceremonies

All of our judges are welcomed with a formal ceremony. Departing judges are also offered an official farewell.

New judges swear an oath administered by the Chief Judge to do equal justice to all persons, and to discharge the duties of the office without fear, favour or affection. They are welcomed to the Court by representatives of the Victorian Bar Council and Law Institute of Victoria before being given the opportunity to respond.

Our ceremonies are attended by other judges of the court, their family and friends and representatives from other Victorian courts. Some judges elect to take part in a formal ceremony marking the end of their time on the Court bench.

We webcast all of our welcome and farewell ceremonies.
