County Court of Victoria
Jury Service

Trial by jury is a vital component of our legal system and our democratic way of life. Jury service is a fundamental responsibility of all citizens, as well as being a unique and rare privilege.

Accordingly, juries which comprise of citizens who have been randomly selected from the community serve on Criminal and Civil jury trials in the Supreme and County Courts in Melbourne, as well as Regional courts across Victoria. The jury in both Criminal and Civil cases has the role of determining the facts and then applying the law, given by the judge, to those facts in order to reach a verdict of guilty or not guilty in a criminal case or, to decide liability in a civil case.

The efficient management of Victoria's jury system is the responsibility of the Office of the Juries Commissioner which is located in the Victorian County Court Complex at 250 William Street, Melbourne and Deputy Juries Commissioner's which are located at major country courts.

Jury Service information can now be found on the Courts and Tribunals Victoria web site: www.courts.vic.gov.au
